Congratulations on your engagement. Lobola is such a beautiful thing. In the age where it seems like traditions are being replaced by modern way of living, I’m glad you and your partner chose to do it this way. You can call me old school or an old soul but I wholeheartedly believe in Lobola. I wrote my thoughts about it a while back here.

Now that he’s finally done the honourable thing of giving lobola, enjoy it. You have exciting times ahead of you.
Set A Realistic Time To Plan Your Wedding
Don’t underestimate the time it takes to plan a wedding, whether it be at a venue or at home. Planning a wedding isn’t as easy as it looks. It takes time and effort to source suppliers. My advice would be to keep the time frame between 12-24months.
Open A Wedding Fund Account
Even a small wedding costs money. A wedding fund account will help you manage and keep track of the wedding budget. Plus, it’ll make life easier for family and friends who wish to contribute towards the wedding.
Set A Budget And STICK To It
Whether your budget is 1m or a thousand, when planning your wedding, you’ll always come across new trends. This and that, which will add to your budget. Don’t fall for everything you see. Remember to save some of your pennies for after the wedding. Which brings me to no5
The Style and Feel Of The Wedding
Knowing your style from the word go will help keep your sanity. There’s always a new thing someone is doing. Or an image on Pinterest that will make you think twice about the type of style you’ve chosen. Don’t fall for any of that. Be comfortable with what you’ve chosen. I promise you, even if you were to change your original style, nine times out of ten, you’ll always go back to the first choice.
Decide Whether You Want To Hire A Planner
If you can afford to hire a planner then go ahead and do it. A good wedding planner will show you how to manage your budget, help with DIY and sometimes negotiate better deals for you.
If you can’t afford to hire a wedding planner, it’s a good idea to delegate tasks to friends and family who are willing to help. However, you’ll need to be upfront about what’s expected of them, don’t just assume that they’ll know what to do.
Book A Venue
If you’re getting married at home, make sure there’s enough room to accommodate a marquee/tent. If getting married at a venue book it as early as possible.
Book A Photographer
Good photographers get booked a year or so in advance. If you have your heart set on a particular photographer don’t waste any time. Book them now. I know many photographers have instalment plans in place, so even if you can’t afford to pay the entire cost, you can always pay bit by bit.
Sign Up For Pinterest
Pinterest is a good virtual tool that you can use to create the ultimate wedding boards. It’s like tearing the pages out of wedding magazines and attaching them to your boards but in a digital way. You can sign up here
